Walkthrough stuttering Issues 3.0

Please cast your votes in our two ongoing feedback polls here and here!
  • Hi everyone. Im having issues with my walkthroughs. Once rendered the stutter was ever 3-4 sec on playback this was @4k 120fps. Ive upgraded to 3.0 but the issue was still happening on 2.9.

Upon looking at GPU usage while rendering it was rare that it ever went above 30%.. and most of the time sat at about 17%. Memory and CPU usage were even less. Is there a way to allocate more resources to enscape?

Im assuming this is why the stuttering is happening. Video worked fine @1080 60fps.

  • Why must you were under 4K at 120fps? If there's not a reason for that kind of resolution, render 2K at 30fps of the stuttering stops. Perhaps the frame rate of your video is conflicting with the frame rate of your monitor. There's no point rendering 120 frames per second if your desktop monitor is refreshing at 60 frames a second.

  • Which video player are you using? 4k and 120fps is quite demanding, you might want to reduce that to 60fps, which still requires quite some bandwidth. Players like the windows video player can't really cope with that (alternative could be the VLC player).

Stuttering in videos is almost always a playback issue (player and or hardware).

  • Check video codecs, Windows Media Player CAN play high res videos with high framerate if the correct codecs are installed correctly in Windows... Years ago Codec Packs for Windows XP and Windows 7 would address some of the playback issues for some users. http://www.videohelp.com

Also make sure the storage the video(s) are being played from is fast enough...

  • I just reproduced the problem with a model exporting video 4K @120 fps... 133MB file, which is nothing significant these days... no codecs installed in Windows for optimum playback using Windows' built in media player. Windows 10 Pro latest version... recent install with all Windows Updates.

    AMD 5900x 12Cores

    64GB RAM

NVME 4th gen 2TB SSD drive

the video stutters every few seconds... I have a monitor that is 100Hz, and about to install a monitor that can do 144Hz to 175Hz...

Then I tried VLC, and the video played very smoothly...

Maybe research which video codec for windows to install so that users can reference it as it will help users not have to deal with a different video app like VLC...

Depending on what the purpose is and the network environment, software policies, codecs may be a better option than having IT teams having to support yet another piece of software that needs to be updated every so often...

XP Codec Pack used to be an option several years ago...it may still be around. ffmpeg is another one... check with your IT team before installing anything... and always have Antivirus up to date...

    EDIT: https://www.videohelp.com/software/XviD-Codec

  • 120fps takes considerably longer to render and 30fps-60fps is sufficient for perception.

In low end systems and / or with heavy or complex models... yes... but for Digital Signage and showcasing portfolio work... who would not want to show off with buttery smooth 120FPS video of their models?

This is a per-user decision. Having options is good.

  • Before I forget, installing video codecs in Windows will allow any video player (most, at least) to take advantage of the video playback performance optimizations... so, if you are running a Digital Signage app on Windows, and it must use the codecs installed in Windows, not VLC, then that is one advantage of having a codec over a standalone video player like VLC.

Same for some kiosk apps that rely on the codecs installed in Windows.

    Something to consider.

  • thanks for the help everyone. I notice a big difference between 60 & 120 FPS. I will look into making some sense of the codecs.. again. *Microsoft keeps telling me if windows is up to date then the codecs should be also...

i have a completed another walkthrough @2560x1440 (with the custom tab) and this seemed to work ok.

The file i was rendering was 50mb after i purged it from 230mb, i usually do that before i render) i have an rtx2070 gpu with 32gb of ram and an ssd. Monitor is 144htz

  • i have rendered another video at 4k 60 fps and that is skippping also.... so the problem looks like it is with the resolution not the fps. i had also downloaded one of the div-x codec listed above and that didnt help. for reference i am using windows "Movie & TV" app to play them.. i have also tried windows media player and the results are the same.

  • Ok... I have downloaded and used VLC player and the 4K 60fps video plays perfectly! that's a big relief. so in future don't use windows players for 4K content.

Thanks so much for everyones help. I was going crazy trying to work out what was going on!

Yeah, I use the codecs cause I do a lot of video encoding and what not... 4K videos play just fine in WMP (Windows Media Player) after you install the codecs.

unfortunately i dont have the time to keep messing around with codec that dont auto download when i update windows.. i would love to minimise the programs on my computer but after trying the codecs listed above they didnt help the issue unfortunately. :(

OK. I downloaded the MediaInfo app to identify the codec that Enscape uses...

    Enscape_2021-03-04-11-42-30.mp4

    Format : MPEG-4

    Format profile : Base Media

    Codec ID : isom (isom/iso2/mp41)

    File size : 134 MiB

    Duration : 13 s 684 ms

Overall bit rate mode : Variable

    Overall bit rate : 81.9 Mb/s

    Writing application : Lavf58.49.100

NOTE: Codec ID is "isom" which I do not recall seeing before... maybe this is something the Enscape Dev team can address... Use a different codec ID OR compression library to export the video...

And here is VLCs info as well:

I wonder if the Codec identifiers on the resulting MP4 from Enscape are causing Windows to not be able to select the correct codec/hardware acceleration and thus the video looks choppy...

I installed a few different codec packs including LAV, KLite, XVid... none played the Enscape MP4 file correctly in Media Player or the "Movies and TV" app...

Downloading a 4k 120fps mp4 test file from a link in the description of this YouTube video (large file) plays smoothly with the codecs mentioned above:

Those GB sized videos played just fine...

  • Some more observations i have noticed..

When using VLC player on battery mode on my RTX laptop the 4K video was choppy again... i also dowloaded VLC to my surface pro and again the 4k video was choppy... while the 1440p version worked fine though... does Enscape have a video player they recommend for playback?
