The two Jonathan mentions a few posts above are the ones I have been looking at myself for gaming/VR. Make sure it has the GTX 1070 for a little more future proofing, and personally I would avoid a 4k display but I don't think that is an option on the ones mentioned (they are 144hz FHD I believe).

I recommended this to a customer.
https://www.multicom.no/busine…t:10642023;c:1000042;fl:0
only 1,8 cm thick. Multicom is a Norwegian brand but i am sure you can find same design elsewhere

I won't recommend a 4k screen on a mobile workstation. Windows is not able to scale properly so and some applications don't scale at all.
4k screens for Windows are just
- more expensive
- less comfortable

I just ordered a new XPS 15" (4 lane thunderbolt 3) and a Razer V2 eGPU (putting a 1080 Ti) with the intent of:
Having a primary Revit workstation that can run Enscape (non VR) on a regular basis - but not have to lug a gaming rig around
Use the eGPU as a dock - but provide the power needed for running an Oculus (and can offer a mobile solution)
I can report back in a week or so once i receive the items.

Hi
I'm moving from stationary to a laptop solution.
I have been offered two different models / brands, but I'm not hardcore IT minded so I could use some advice
ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS (GX501)
https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-ZEPHYRUS-GX501/
MSI GS65 STEALTH THIN 8RF
https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GS65-Stealth-Thin-8RF.html
wich one would you go for?
thanks

Jorgensen It depends a little bit on the wanted usage. What is your intention regards the usage?
The only advantage of the ASUS that I see on the first look is the GTX 1080 MaxQ instead of the GTX 1070 MaxQ of the MSI.
=>Should result in around 20% more GPU performance
But the ASUS has an official 2 hour battery life, which should be less in real life and the MSI has up to 8h which I can confirm.
=>I'd go with the MSI as I need to work most of the time with office non 3D application and need battery life for it.
E.g. the power supply on the plane only provides 60 watts, but you need at least 180 watts to charge the battery. So you need battery life.

Thanks for your input.
After reading your message I went to view the differences of the 1080 and 1070, and it seems that the 1080 has around 25% more cuda cores than the 1070. I will primarily use the laptop for sketchup / enscape and revit / enscape. But also vray and octane and I guess that’s where the 25% more cuda cores could make a difference.
Battery time is not that big issue for me, as the laptop is for replacing two desktop stations at different locations. So I will be wired 90% of the time and using a docking station. But I can see that the battery time could be an issue for a lot of users.
Thanks for your input.

Is Enscape depending on CUDA cores?

well I would recommend go for Acer predator helios 300 which is one of the top gaming laptops under 1000 because of its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU that runs all the games in the market also give a high frame rate Also MSI GL72M is Good choice if you are fan of MSI

Hi, sorry for asking this again (I did it in other thread)
@Jonathan Knoefel Do you think this laptop model, Dell XPS15 with 32GB RAM, Intel® Core™ i7-8750H and NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti would be able to work fine in Revit and Enscape? I do not do crazy things in Enscape, and I do not play video games.
My main work is with Revit, but sometimes I need videos and images from Enscape.
Many thanks,
Javier

Due to budget issue, since long time I am using Asus gaming laptop. But after using it for more than 6 months I now say that they are best gaming laptops
I agree with you, I also like Asus gaming laptop. Especially ASUS VivoBook, the price is relatively cheap. If you want to read something about this physics, here is an interesting article: https://pc4u.org/best-cheap-gaming-laptop-under-500-dollars/

Basically a gaming laptop have some extra edge you can carry with anywhere. I would definitely recommend you to buy a gaming laptop with high-end configurations. There are many options available out there on market and search on internet. An interesting guide is available you can look https://www.bestlaptopninja.co…gaming-laptops-under-800/ Also, a few recommendations according to me if you're running on a tight budget
1: Acer Aspire E 15
2: lenovo ideapad 330
3: Asus vivobook F51OUA
4: Hp 2018 model inspiron -
The best are the Clevo.
For those who render and need a laptop, good periodic maintenance is essential to eliminate dust and replace thermal paste. The 17 inches have better cooling systems.
I often do maintenance for some colleagues and famous brands like Asus, Hp etc. they are not comparable with Clevo. All undersized in search of saving a few millimeters or for aesthetics. One of the few companies that is saved is MSI. -
I'm personally using the 15 inch GS65/66 stealth series of MSI in the highest possible config. Works like a charm and battery live is also pretty dang good.
