HDR Button for Balancing Interior and Exterior Exposure

  • When looking out windows to the exterior live or rendering images, either the interior is very dark or the exterior is super bright depending on the exposure settings. I wish there was a HDR button that could balance the exposures between inside and outside. Thanks

  • This is a great idea.

I will go ahead and preempt the likely argument against this feature... "It is not how a Real World camera behaves"

Many cameras and phones now have automatic HDR processing.

As such, the general audience for our renderings has come to expect that photos taken inside which show the exterior do not necessarily have to be washed out.

  • If this option is a check box, we could always turn it off or on depending on the situation.

Yes it is not how cameras behave but it is how our eyes work! Which in VR, you are seeing the digital space as if you there in person and not through a camera lens. Having this option would be greatly beneficial to replicate viewing something through the human eye.

  • jnurnberger , thanks a lot for the request - just to make sure, as those settings are usually used to help with interior/exterior brightness balance, have you tried both the "Highlights" and "Shadows" sliders already:

If so, and it does not produce the desired outcome, let me know and I'll forward your initial wish as a feature request. :)

  • It would be great if that helped but it does not for changing both interior and exterior, which is the issue here. Here are two examples of what I am talking about:

Image 1: 50% exposure The exterior has nice balance between levels, but the inside is very dark.

Image 2: 85% Exposure. The interior now has nice balance with highlight and shadow, but the exterior is completely blown out.

I could take both renders and combine them in Photoshop but that takes a lot of time. Hopefully this helps! Thanks!

  • Demian Gutberlet I believe what he is looking for is the type of HDR functionality that many modern cameras (and even iphones) provide these days. For example I can photograph with my Theta Z1 and the interior and exterior is automatically balanced.

    jnurnberger , is this correct?

Yes, exactly. If Enscape could balance the above 2 images' exposures so the interior and exterior exposure looked good, that would be amazing. Renders out windows could match what our human eye sees and in the end would require a lot less photoshopping and adjusting so that the interior and exterior look nice. Thanks for the clarification renderwiz

  • Thanks a bunch, jnurnberger and renderwiz , that makes it a lot more clear - I'll put everything together and forward it to our product management team as always. I appreciate the feedback!
