Is importing 5mil Poly asset possible?

    I have a project in NY and we need to do some view analysis via rendering from our building to the Manhattan skyline. However the model (.fbx) we have of the city is 40x40km and contains over 5mil polygons (low poly model). I know that Enscape suggest no larger than 20k models should be imported but does anyone have any experience, tips or even know if it can be done?


    The alternative would be to import it direct into ArchiCAD but I don't believe ArchiCAD supports the FBX files. At least not with my experience.

  • No I have not, I am worried about loss of detail, only in Manhattan. One solution I though about was cutting down the size on 3DS (Brooklyn, Bronx, Qeeuns, greater NY), but I think it would still be in the millions so the problem would still persist.

  • Do you actually need that whole model? What other programs do you have access to besides Archicad? Blender is free, I'd edit the model, delete what you don't need and find some other format to get it into Archicad. (Though Google seems to indicate it -does- take fbx?) Creating an asset from that sounds like a losing battle.


    Alternatively you could use Google maps and Blender to capture just the area you need.

  • It will depend on your hardware and if you have enough GPU memory to run it, create the asset and give a try, worst that can happen is that it crashes and then you know that it wont work.


    Do not try to import a model like that directly into archicad, it just won't handle that many polys. you could convert to a point cloud and open in archicad but then you can't render/view in enscape

  • Thanks for the help everyone. I will reduce the size first, I don't need the whole model. However it will come down to me getting it into ArchiCAD or Enscape to create the view as it is all I have to work with.

    I am going to look into Blender now and see if it will be viable. When it comes to ArchiCAD and importing external models it is always a mission.

  • We've done the exact same what you're doing (pulling in a part of Manhattan as an asset). We ended up doing about a 100 city blocks (10x10 blocks) and that was doable.


    You can only optimize environment models so much until you lose too much detail, so it still ended up being a couple hundred thousands poligons. Not great, but definitely doable, especially given that it's not going to be used in many projects and is not likely to be copied around.


    Cropping the model should be fairly straightforward in Blender (or any other mesh modeler).
