What may also help is reducing the grass height to it's lowest setting, just in case you haven't tried that yet via our Material Editor. -

for me it would be for creating rugs like the one in the attached image - the one to the left is Vray, the other one Enscape.
but there might be better ways to achieve this result with enscape?

Yes, this is in 2.8 and is contained in the current Preview, as mentioned in the Preview release notes. Give it a go, by all means.
