I have a complex model (14 unit apartment building, plus interior furnishings, etc.) and I would like to have the geometry closest to the mirror get selected for reflection. There's also a weird distortion that happens, you can see it in the reflection of the tap for complex objects close to the mirror. Is it possible for the software to be "smarter" about what gets reflected, and how?
Mirror - what geometry gets selected?

It's certainly not perfect - we try to optimize the selection and amount of "stuff in reflections". The highest quality you can currently get is if you use Ultra settings and export a screenshot. On AMD, the quality is slightly worse due to a technical limitation on AMD cards.
If you are interested in a real technical answer, you can learn more in the article of "Ray Tracing Gems" that Enscape wrote for NVIDIAs new book about Ray Tracing (section 26.3.1): https://link.springer.com/cont…F978-1-4842-4427-2_26.pdf

So tl;dr is that I'm not likely to see significant changes in how mirror reflections are handled?

TL;DR: You will, especially if you own RTX hardware. There's just not much you can do right now.

Ah, time to save up for some RTX cards
