Another manifestation/frosted glass issue

I can't seem to get a realistic looking frosted white film applied to glass (manifestation). The white appears darker as soon as the transparency box is checked or I lower the opacity in sketchup thus enabling it. It also is nowhere near strong enough with what's behind it being still very visible. Is there a way to remedy this?

At the moment it is a thin piece of geometry drawn on top of the glass but I have tried making a 12mm thick piece of geometry and applying the material but the results are the same.

Any ideas?

... Although I have found that I can't get it to look right from the inside. (I had to create a vector decal rather than just use an image)

hmm and what about to make a texture and then insert to the glass material into transparent layer as a mask ?

There is an issue with doing it that way... I think it's because the image has to be pure B&W rather than colour... I think it might work with greyscale, but I have not experimented further (I can get it to look like 'noise' rather than a soft transparency you would expect:)

For frosted effect, applying a noisy image as bump map on glass seems to do the trick, like in this post:

Twin glass problem

Glass thickness (2 layer of glass on top of each other) seems to cancel any effect. I know it sucks, but try it with only a panel.
