sketchup - large file handling - option to really only export "visible" layers and entities to enscape - disable live link

  • hi there,

subjet ist idea.. as the support knows, im working on a large file in sketchup atm with lots of different heavy geo.. im hitting 1gb skp file size and that is without all of the proxies and skatter setups...

there are another 2-3 gig for sure alone in the scattered trees and bushes

problem now is that a fast preview is kinda impossible

the export process takes about 4-5 minutes each time i start enscape because it does export all geometry and stufff even though its layers are invisible or the entities are "hidden"...

it would really be a super feature to have a preview eport option that only exports only what is really visible in scene at the moment of klicking the button... then of course livelink needs to be disabled while in this operation mode... and enscape should only reexport the geometry and other changes except for camera and daytime on manual button click...

why would i want this? if working with proxies, finishing materials etc its normal to work in enscpape live view but one does not always need the full shabang :/

    highly appreciated !

    best, franz

    edit:

i have to add something here :) compliments for the great software... im running 2.5.3 now and its rock solid stable, once loaded performance is great and its a miracle of a application guys .. congrats - really! its an heck of an enjoyment to play with this :)

& ofc using enscape and lately d5 and also a little ue5 :)

  • @bsfranza Thank you for your post. I can see how this may cause you issues in your specific case. Keep in mind that Enscape was created to be a relatively simple and elegant tool and we are always rather careful when it comes to adding new functionalities.

Also, Enscape should only export data that is visible in the scene. If this issue occurs again in the future, maybe try to reduce the stress of memory usage in SketchUp as well, you can right click on parts of your project in SketchUp and "Save as external model for Enscape".

Otherwise I am glad to hear that 2.5.3 version of Enscape has improved your stability and overall experience with your current project.

If you will have any other ideas or issues regarding Enscape please do not hesitate to get in touch.

  • hi there again.. well i have to dig into this a bit...

sketchup offers diverse ways of working in context and out of it...

let me show you the options

    1. just hide something via right click or menue command

    2. make layers invisible

    3. use the show context while editing groups components option and also the show same components option while editing..

    and all combinations of it...

now, again... while finetuning materials and placing proxies etc it would be cool if we could force to only export once what is active...

at the moment enscpae does not take into account what is visible on screen - it always exports all yet its only shown whats on screen it if method 1 and 2 are used. 3 is not taken into account.

  • Hi to the devs team!

I must upvote this ultra-reasonable request by Franz!! It is really unsane that Enscape exports ALL the geometry and then renders only what's visible. That's how it works now, and in some cases it takes really too long. I usually work with dynamic components, and one of the features I must use most of the times is to switch between hidden sub-objects, but I don't want enscape to export all the things I have hidden!

  • Actually I quite like the fact that I can instantly toggle scenes and hide/unhide geometry to show a client multiple options "live".

If this is going to be an option then please make it an Option so that people can choose to use it or not.

  • the option is all that is asked for :)

  • bsfranza and pibuz , pardon for the delayed response; be assured, that your feedback will of course be forwarded as always! :) Thank you very much.

  • Hi to the DEVs team!

..sorry to bump again this topic: I hope the team is at least considering to add this functionality: me and my firm usually work with SketchUp's Dynamic Components, and many times there's a lot of hidden and unuseful geometry. This usually leads to huge export times, so it's very unefficient for us to work like this....

  • Hey pibuz , we feel your struggles. Your request is in our system, and is being carefully evaluated by our product management team. Thank you for checking!
