although Dadi´s line suggestion is to be recommended in general!! - also for lighting within other rendertool´s btw because this makes positioning, distribution or alignment much much easier. To add further suitable axis lines is additionally useful which are e.g. accessible from top view ...

Yup! Especially with Sketchup already having a perfectly functional Move tool. Can we just have an option to place, and then use the Goup/Component grips of the light object to set the rotation and placement afterwards? Most of the time, I want my lighting orthogonal to my plans.

Enscape should improve lighting placement.

I agree it is confusing. Lights should place like any other asset or component. Click in scene to place, and then move/rotate/scale etc.

+1 to all the requests for a more practical way to place lights.

Could be useful to prepare "Light Components" with the "glue to any plane" option active, so that when we import them the component's origin sticks to the actual plane we are clicking on. Just a hint.

Did this with a bunch of lighting props. Preparing your own little premade asset library makes total sense from a efficiency and workflow perspective. Here's a couple of mine for inspiration:
