HTC Vive Cosmos vs HTC Vive Pro - support timeline request

  • Hello everyone!

We have just ordered a Lenovo workstation laptop P73 with all the trimmings and are ready to order a professional grade VR headset to go with it.

I wonder what is your experience with HTC Vive Pro versus HTC Vive Cosmos? What is the timeline for the Enscape support team to provide full compatibility with the Vive Cosmos?

In your professional opinion would you wait until the Cosmos is fully supported or simply order a tried and true Vive Pro?

Some people in the office strongly recommend to stay with Oculus Rift. Is the Oculus line fully supported by Enscape at this time?

Your comments and feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • Buy a Rift S, best bang for the buck and like the cosmos you dont need external sensors, ideal for a laptop.

Rift S is about half the price of a cosmos and has arguably better optics, better fit and better support. It does have a bit less resolution and refresh, though. The tradeoffs is in Oculus' favor imho.

  • mannyl , I agree with tobiasolsen . We don't have an HTC Vive Cosmos in our offices, yet, but from what I know the Cosmos is another SteamVR based headset, and should therefore be supported just fine with Enscape at this point without us even having to adjust Enscape to that particular model.

However, the computer based Oculus Rift headsets are all supported by Enscape perfectly fine, and we've ourselves made great experiences with the Oculus Rift S.

So, in short, the choice is yours :)

  • To add my 2 cents,

I have the P73 with Quadro 5000 and a Rift S and absolutely love the setup and portability. Having used the Vive Pro for a while I must say I'm glad I went back to Oculus again, especially eliminating the use of external sensors.

Also bought the Quest and start to venture in streaming from the P73 to the Quest.... another story, but that will be the holy grail :)

  • Kaj Burival - Thank you Kaj and guys for your feedback. Looks like the Oculus Rift S is tops regardless of the lower refresh rate and non-detachable head banding (for cleaning).

Are you able to guesstimate a possible timeframe for Enscape engineering to provide full compatibility with HTC Vive Cosmos? Based on previous experience would you say it may take 3 months, 6 months or more than a year?

The Oculus Rift S is inexpensive enough that we could start there and upgrade to HTC once full Enscape compatibility becomes available.

Hillmeister - Out of curiosity, is your P73 fitted with a standard Quadro 5000 or the RTX version of the same type? The reason I ask is because we recently upgraded my workstation to RTX Quadro 4000 and most of the time it is awesome, but every now and then it does something unexpected with Enscape. I guess RTX technology/compatibility has to be flushed out a bit more.

  • Hi Mannyl,

The P73 came with the RTX5000 and sometimes it needs a reboot to get Enscape VR running ok, but performance is good.

One thing to keep in mind with the P73 is that it comes with Hybrid graphics. It uses the onboard graphics and switches to the Quadro when performance is needed. This is to save battery, but I disabled it because it just isn't working. Maybe Lenovo will iron this out later, but for now I have the Quadro switched on full time.

And to add to the Rift S, VRcover has washable covers for the visor available. Unfortunately not (yet) for the halo like they had for PSVR.

Well, the HTC Vive Cosmos should already be supported, although the controller descriptions inside VR may be a bit off, which should be the only "problem" at the moment, but this is still also something which we'll resolve ASAP, if there are any issues like that. Overall it should work fine though!

I have said it before and i will say it again, I dont quite understand this misconception that the Cosmos is a superior HMD to the Rift S.

Just because it is priced higher does not mean it is a better, it just means HTC needs bigger margins!

True, the resolution and refresh rate is higher on Cosmos but that also stresses your gpu a lot more, which mean you will have to lower the settings in Enscape. On the other hand, the Rift S has superior fit, better optics and way better controllers, all of which cost nothing in GPU overhead.

So even if you dont take price into consideration, Rift S has the better tradeoffs imo.

  • tobiasolsen Thank you Tobias for your passionate advocacy in favor of the Oculus Rift S. Quite a lot of people agree with you, particularly on the cost/features ratio.

However in real life some people like their coffee bitter while others like it sweet :), and yet others don't like coffee at all.

I appreciate your point of view. It is very helpful for my evaluation.
