You should better keep these settings at the default and increase the camera exposure.

hmm....but increasing the exposure burns the image during daylight.
I was trying to create a sun study video from daytime to night time.
I am guessing there is no way to adjust the exposure to each keyframe the same way as we can for the time of day?

In that case I generally recommend you set the Exposure to Auto again, so that it adjusts automatically when the time of day in the video is set to daytime again, otherwise the image will be overly bright. Alongside, the scene is really dark since it's night-time, I would recommend just placing some lights here and there. In reality, if it's pitch black outside, you will also not be able to see much if there are no light sources (or light pollution from the city for example).
