Enscape Lights in rhino

  • Seems the Enscapes lights in SketchUp works much better then using rhino lights in Enscape.

In SketchUp, It does not slow down the rendering even though a lot of lights added in the model.

But in rhino, it significantly slow down and could crash often.

I wonder when we can have a panel of Enscape’ lights just like SketchUp has.

I guess then we can have a much fast and stable lights rendering solution

    Thanks

  • There is no plan at the present time to introduce Enscape lighting in to Rhino, as the native Rhino lighting is deemed to have the same functionality.

However, your claim that Rhino is being slowed down by this is interesting.

Could you contact us on our support email referencing the URL for this thread? As, we may require further information from you, and possibly some log files and its easier to do this over the email /ticketing system.

How do I add IES to Rhino Spotlight? I just started using Enscape for Rhino (have been using SK), and I'm flabbergasted I can't find a way to use IES.

  • Hi, random, but there is no native IES lights in Rhino 6 ( only Vray or other rendering engine), I have asked on the Rhino7 wip forum and this won't be supported in 7.. they have added a better attenuation for the lighting, but no ies.. very weird... as mentioned above lighting in sketchup is way better .. so that's a problem going forward.. especially for lighting consultants and obviously architects.

A way around I found is adding two lights with different angle but far to be as nice... it would be great if there is some progress made on that somewhere, not sure if Enscape as any weight to ask Rhino3d..?

    thanks

It's more than baffling that there's no IES support, and Enscape team asserts "the native Rhino lighting is deemed to have the same functionality."

  • gautier - We do not provide IES support at the present time, as Rhino does not provide the input for IES, so to some degree this is a technical limitation and one could argue, is also baffling that Rhino are not supporting IES yet.

This means we would have to use our own lighting UI, which is possible, but is also a demand on resources.

I will create a dedicated Feature Request for this though, as it appears so far, no other users have been asking for this. I'll make sure to up-vote it with everyone else in this thread who has commented.

I can't really do much more than that at this juncture.

  • Thanks Pete Chamberlain I understand, you guys cannot do much on that side, it's a Rhino feature that should be here already. The Rhino team were surprised I asked this question on their forum... One hope would be a developer creating a script for Rhino to support IES but I haven't found any yet. Among things, It definitely shows on the showcase page, Rhino users are few and far.. hopefully it will come in time

  • Surprised to hear that other users are not asking for IES support. It should be a basic feature for any commercial renderer.

  • Goodmorning - perhaps the flood gates will now open.

I think its partly due to our Rhino user base not being so vast, and somewhat segmented in terms of industries they span.

But, by the same token, we could again ask why is Rhino itself not natively supporting IES, if Rhino users require it so much?

Sure, VRay has up to now covered most use cases.

It's added now as a Feature Request though. I can only suggest that other Rhino users who want this feature now speak up so it has some chance of being looked at.

  • Not sure were should i put my vote but yes! IES support in rhino would be amazing! one of the hardest part i have found dealing with enscape its the miss and hit of rhino lights. IES lights would make a better more accurate images.

I can't imagine anyone using professionally using Rhino relies on default Rhino renderer, instead of Vray or something else. Having said that, v7 beta has lighting fall off. Rhino users also complained to Rhino team for lack of IES support. Really hope Enscape shows the lighting falloff when the final V7 comes out.

  • Thank you for the additional feedback, I've gladly forwarded it accordingly, plus your up-votes will be taken into account of course.

Frankly, material is the most significant and fundamental issue: Group/joined object mapping on separate faces, Displacement, UV mapping, etc. Enscape really needs to reflect what's shown in Rhino material. Enscape is touted as a realtime render, but it's falling too short when it comes to Rhino support as much as we appreciate your replies on the forum and hard work.

At least lighting can be placed and adjusted. There's no work around with this material issue. It's almost -- we need to stop thinking about Rhino/Enscape route as a company.

  • IES on ENSCAPE for Rhino would be much appreciated, I never took the time to ask for the feature because I didn't choose ENSCAPE in the first place exactly for the lack of IES support. But I'm periodically checking on new features because I really would like to use it since it's fast and I already own Rhino. However, because of the lack of this particular feature and some others (such as the possibility to change texture or color to the object library), I'm still not able to switch to ENSCAPE.

I also agree that it's not Rhino's fault that IES lights are not supported: Usually, IES lights are particularly important for professional works in the architecture field which are never done with internal cycles renderer in Rhino, usually professional rhino users install third parties plugins such as Vray to overcomes the deficiencies of Rhino internal renderer, which provides better rendering times, more personalization on materials, and more lights types, so in my opinion if ENSCAPE defines itself as a professional rendering tool for architecture it can't lack of all the tools that professionals already use for rendering, such as good rendering times, better materials, and good lights (and maybe better camera controls, such as horizontal and vertical shifting), otherwhise there would be no point to pay 500 extra € only to lose some level of realism and reduce render times.

Said that I think the number of users that ask for a specific feature is not always reflecting the actual importance of a feature, usually, professionals have limited time to do jobs, and if they don't find a specific feature on the software that they have they simply switch to a different software because asking for a feature is time-consuming and they might never be implemented, and if they do it would require a long time which is not compatible with professionals schedule.

So my suggestion is: don't wait for users requests, because for every explicit request, you have already lost 10 clients silently, rather look at what other competitor software do and if you want to compete offer the same things they do and improve the quality or lower the price.

TLDR: I can't wait to have IES on ENSCAPE rhino

  • rikkarlo , thanks a lot for your input - You can now also forward all of what you wrote through our Public Voting Portal.

This way your request and Feedback most of all reaches our product managers directly. If you can think of anything else you wish to add, feel free to do so of course.

  • i believe that i upvoted this topic before and alot of users did !
