Enscape on MacOS

  • As long as my clients who have Mac's can View their designs on the Web Browser I dont care.. however...

    External GPU's allow Mac users to use real video cards!

    Your Thunderbolt 3-equipped Mac running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or later can access additional graphics performance by connecting to an external graphics processor (also known as an eGPU).

    An eGPU can give your Mac additional graphics performance for professional apps, 3D gaming, VR content creation, and more.

    eGPUs are supported on any Thunderbolt 3-equipped Mac:

    • MacBook Pro (2016) and newer1
    • iMac (2017) and newer
    • iMac Pro

  • Hi I'm having a Mac too;

    Figuring out how I can run Enscape on a Mac;

    - eGPU can't run on BOOTCAMP + WIN 10

    - Mac doesn't support OpenGL 4.2, the min. requirement for Enscape

    - (Mac = OpenGL4.1 !) Read: https://www.quora.com/Why-is-O…rly-supported-on-Mac-OS-X

    - I read that some Mac have 4.2, although officially stated Mac's only supports 4.1

    So;

    1/ can I have Enscape running on a Mac after all? Any workaround? Things to look at especially ordering a Mac?

    2/ Anyone experience with Virtual PC's? I've found paperspace.com so far. Other suggestions?
    3/ Buying an PC + eGPU which I can hopefully use alternately on both PC + Mac

  • Hi There,

    It looks like this topic has been thoroughly discussed in the thread above. But I just want to add my voice to the choir to beg and plea for a version of Enscape that runs natively on a Mac.

    I had the absolute pleasure of using Enscape at my last job, and I have to say that in all of my years of using various rendering engines, Enscape is hands down the BEST. You guys absolutely nailed it. THIS is the way design professionals should be working. You have managed to take something that, for us end users, used to be overly complicated and incredibly time consuming, and made it fast, easy and most importantly, reliable. With Enscape, I am able to use my time DESIGNING, and not endlessly fiddling with settings to get my scenes to look right. And then VR is just icing on the cake. I never really thought much of VR in the past, but now that I have used it in a professional setting, It's is hard to imagine how I am going to function without it.

    I'm hoping that there will be an announcement at the upcoming WWDC that will convince the Enscape team that Mac OS will work.

    If it does, and if you guys ARE developing a Mac version, I would love to be a tester.

    - Count me in to be a beta-tester !

    - Any workaround to have Enscape running on a Mac?

    - how recent needs the Mac to be? OpenGL 4.2 min to have Enscape running is

    - Any suggestions? What to look at if buying a new one…

    - can eGPU work with BOOTCAMP. Apple's website BOOTCAMP doesn't support eGPU's

    or

    - rent a PC

    - rent a PC into the cloud > Paperspace.com

    and hoping the Mac support will arrive any time soon…

    But when I READ THIS https://www.quora.com/Why-is-O…rly-supported-on-Mac-OS-X

    my hopes gets very low…

  • kittonian It won't happen this year. And we have to see how Apple realizes their announcement to cut of OpenGL for MacOS in order to force developers to their own Metal 2 interface.

    So Enscape will NEVER be rewritten or teleported in METAL2? Apple has left the support for OpenGL in favor for there own METAL…

  • … and the bypass with an eGPU's isn't possible since eGPU's doesn't work with BOOTCAMP…?!

  • VR on MacOS is coming. I believe its just a matter of when Apple releases a "plug-and -play" ready solution for the Consumer vs the Developers (or their own headset). I would assume that Enscape could start exploring developing/porting for the Mac once they have the tools. It sounds like HTC hardware is higher on the list vs Oculus. So Enscape, start with HTC support on the Mac....;)

    Some good viewing/reading:

    I'm sure the following makes more sense to the Enscape Team:

    https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2018/611/

    https://developer.apple.com/de…nt-kit/external-graphics/

    https://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chime…ac-vr-nov2018/mac-vr.html

    There are developers working on VR on MacOS and Beta testers, can't Enscape also start on this?

  • timeless I cannot recommend eGPUs in general as you lose around 30% performance compared to an integrated card.

    External GPUs can be a good addition for a slim/weaker mobile workstation. I must admit that I was not aware that Bootcamp is not fully supporting eGPUs.

    =>In this case I only can recommend to get a Windows workstation or the iMac with the most powerful graphics.

    norbertsf Therefor we would have to support MacOS at first ;)

    Apple is losing market share in professional workstations as they sell old hardware for 2-5 times the price. (MacPro, iMac)

    So it is getting more and more unattractive for us to rewrite our whole software.

  • Have there been any new plans to revisit Enscape for macOS? Does the new GPU in the 16” MacBook Pros allow for Enscape’s full functionality (including VR) if run through Bootcamp? If so, is there a specific configuration of GPU/RAM that would work best.

    I love Enscape and have successfully advocated for and gotten two architectural offices I’ve worked at to implement this software into their standard design/visualization workflow. I would love to purchase a license for personal use but I absolutely hate Windows environment for 99% of of my other work.

    Thanks for making design fun again!

  • as of typing this I’ve heard that there’s no Bootcamp for the new 16” yet. Apple are yet to make the windows driver package for the new hardware.

    I ran Enscape successfully on my MBP 15” 2015 under Bootcamp/windows so I see no reason why it wouldn’t work on the new one when they release the drivers.

  • @mikelasvegas , generally, I'm afraid, there are no concrete plans to implement Mac support any time soon to be completely honest. Right now there are better and better machines being released by Apples, machines which could also run Enscape just fine - but the demand is still not high enough (among other reasons) to justify the development effort. Developing Enscape for Mac natively would require a huge amount of resources, which are currently being used to simply add or improve new functionalities, further CAD solution support, etc. etc. :)

  • For what it is worth, I am also an Apple user who would be thrilled to have Enscape develop native MacOS support. We purchased a Lenovo gaming laptop for running VR; however, it is getting slow and crashes a lot. I would be more than thrilled to have a native solution for viewing my Sketchup models in VR on the new Mac Pro.

    Thank you for the feedback and welcome to our forum! :) I have gladly forwarded your message as well as your upvote which will be added to the existing MacOS support feature request on our agenda to state the further demand for this implementation.

  • Now that Enscape is coming to Vectorworks, that might open up a lot of new users for you on Macs, since we - like so many others - are Mac based, and specifically use VW for that reason. Bring it on!

  • With the M1 there is now a decade ahead of a fixed chipset architecture. That's hopeful;

    But that is not the only parameter to seduce a software developer to enter an OS ecosystem.

    Apple is well known to make drastic changes even just before a Key Note Event;

    That makes it, in some sense, an unreliable partner to work with.

    Although I think Enscape3D has a bright future ahead, only limited big shots have prior acces to unreleased soft- and hardware, which are back again subject of change.

    Would you enter a 'game' like this?
